PAS 670:2021 “Magnesium Oxide based boards for use in buildings” is a standard produced by an industry steering group including MOBBTA (Magnesium Oxide Building Board Trading Association) & published by the BSi which sets out how boards should be tested and verified as fit for purpose in order to provide assurance over quality.

As much of the concern around MgO building board use stems from how the boards react and resist degrade in high humidity environments, a new test was developed for the PAS. This checks the bending strength of boards as per BS EN 12467 “Fibre cement flat sheets” prior to entering the humidity chamber and then again after they are removed. Boards remain in the humidity chamber for 90 days at 90% RH (relative humidity) and 30 degrees centigrade. This is a particularly harsh environment for a building board which may likely never see such conditions in its selected application and one which many other building board type materials found in common use today might struggle to cope with! The aim however is the complete peace of mind which will come from the assurance that only the highest grade MgO building boards will pass the test and fully comply with the PAS.

Resistant 9mm Multi-pro XS starts out with a bending strength much higher than other building boards on the market. At 22.06 MPa (MOR – wet average) our board is more than 100% stronger than other MgO brands, approx. 50% stronger than fibre cement type sheet materials and many times stronger than reinforced gypsum-based boards. The PAS stipulates that after leaving the humidity chamber, bending strength must be recalculated and prove to retain more than 75% of the original bending strength value. Our massive 22.06 MPa bending strength means our customers can expect, zero corner break out when manufacturing and very high resistance to damage and cracking during transportation and construction.

The great news for us and our customers is that Resistant 9mm Multi-pro XS proved to retain 89% of original bending strength and to show no formation of liquid droplets on the surface of the board after such a rigorous test.

Our testing procedures and results were checked by Head of Testing from our 3rd party certifier BBA. Resistant have enjoyed a long relationship with the BBA having held continuous certification of our MgO building boards since 2015.

We see the demonstration of our board’s impressive performance in this demanding test as another major step towards full acceptance of Resistant MgO building boards when correctly selected and fitted following our guidance for applications as detailed in our 3rd party BBA certification.

We will continue to update our customers and industry partners as we reach further significant milestones in our journey. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please call us on 028 9074 9400 or email info@resistant.co.uk.
